Day 28 - John 20

Oh what a glorious morning! Can you imagine Mary Magdalene's range of emotions. On Friday she witnessed the death of probably one of her dearest friends. The man that set her free from her bondage and sin. Now she goes to honor Him at His grave and finds it empty. Then to see two angels, John doesn't give us much hint on what she thought about that, but then she sees the 'gardener' and ask if he knows where the body of her Lord had been taken.  It's not until He says her name that she realizes who she is standing before. The joy that must have filled her heart.

Like Mary, Jesus calls each of us by name and it is an amazing feeling.

This passage highlights several people, which one speaks to you?

  1. Doesn't it just make you want to get up and dance? =) I love the excitement and Peter and John, the earnestness of the women.

This time as I was reading I was hit again by Thomas. He was one of the twelve, so one of the first believers. But we remember him as the doubter. Makes me think about what one event, one reaction would define me for centuries . . .

  2. Holly,
I like what you said: "Like Mary, Jesus calls each of us by name and it is an amazing feeling." I hadn't really thought of that angle. That could make for a great sermon subject.

This whole chapter is so beautiful and mysterious. To me, this is why trying to compare faith and science are like trying to compare an apple to a rock. They are two completely different things. People try to discredit these events or explain them scientifically. When we try to do that, we become like Thomas. I get caught up in this sometimes. But, when I am faithful and listening to my heart rather than my head, I believe the mystery of it all and it has so much more meaning.

  3. John 20
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
Holly, "It's not until He says her name that she realizes who she is standing before."
We are His. We know His voice.
I have called you by name, you are Mine. Isaiah 43:1b

18 Mary from Magdala went to the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord.”
25 The other disciples told him (Thomas), “We’ve seen the Lord.”

We have seen Him! And one day we will see Him face-to-Face.
