Day 324, November 20 - 1 John 1

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (ESV)

9 But if we own up to our sins, God shows that He is faithful and just by forgiving us of our sins and purifying us from the pollution of all the bad things we have done. (The Voice)

I normally like The Voice translation, I'm not sure I like "if we own up to our sins"... is that really the same as confessing them? I need to think about that a little more.

  1. ESV: 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

I think of "own up to" as admitting our sins. I do think that is different than confessing our sins. It is a fine line, but I do think it is different. Confession includes contrition and asking for forgiveness.

  2. I John 1
9 God is faithful and reliable. If we confess our sins, he forgives them and cleanses us from everything we’ve done wrong.
