Day 90, March 31 - Psalm 41, 42

Psalm 41
1 Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the LORD delivers him; 2 the LORD protects him and keeps him alive; he is called blessed in the land; you do not give him up to the will of his enemies.

Psalm 42
1 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
8 By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

Psalm 40
1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. 2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.

16 "No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.
17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
18 Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away."

Let your light shine.

Day 87, March 28 - Luke 7

Click here for today's reading

I love the contrast in this chapter. It opens with a subject heading:

Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant

The Centurion had enough faith to ask Jesus to simply say the word for he knew Jesus had authority.

The chapter ends with:
Here Jesus is in the home of a Pharisee someone who understood Jewish laws and protocols of the day. Yet he ignored all those protocols all the customs.

I want to be the Centurion and trust the authority of Jesus the way he did.

37 "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;
38 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you."

Day 85, March 26, Luke 5

First off, sorry I didn't get this posted sooner... I was so tired last night I just didn't think about it sorry!

And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."
And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets."
And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking.

I love this passage because of Simon's response... "Master we've been doing this all night but because you say so we'll do it." How many times do we feel like God is telling us to do something and we are like "do I have to..." but when we listen, we see a lot of fish!

Luke 4

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness
for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.

Hebrews 2:18 - For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

1 Corinthians 10:13 - No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Day 83, March 24 - Psalm 38

Click here for today's reading

This is one of those Psalms that we should all read when we've blown it big time in our walk with the Lord. The Psalmist is obviously in distress over his sin and it's only in verse 18 where he says "I'm sorry"

It's interesting to me that in this chapter there's no joy experienced by the Psalmist only heartache over his sin.

So much good stuff in this chapter... some of my favorites:

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.
23 The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way;
24 though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.
28 For the LORD loves justice; he will not forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.
30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.
39 The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.
40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

Verse 19

But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

When you look at Mary's life
  • She has an angel visit her to tell her she's going to have a baby
  • Her elderly aunt is pregnant for the first time
  • When she visits that aunt she prophesies over her
  • She has a baby in a manger
  • Shepherds show up to celebrate the birth because angels told them to
  • She takes her child to the temple where Simeon and Anna celebrate and prophesy about her child
  • Not in the Luke account but Magi visit her with gifts for her child because a star lead them
  • Her pre-teen son discusses scripture with the religious leaders
The things she had treasured up were absolutely amazing!

Was it enough to help her through watching her first born son being crucified? I know some of you have lost children and I can't even begin to imagine the pain you've been through.

46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever."
56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

As we approach Holy Week take a moment to reflect on the birth of Jesus and let your soul magnify the Lord and your spirit rejoice in God your Savior!

51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory."
55 "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?"
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

5-7
Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.

Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD.

Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. (1)

Definition of Prophesy Verb
  1. Say that (a specified thing) will happen in the future: "Jacques was prophesying a bumper harvest".
  2. Speak or write by divine inspiration; act as a prophet: "when a man prophesies, it is because the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him".
I like the fact that the first focus is on love and the pursuit of it.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. (4-7)

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (13)

Day 71, March 12 - 1 Cor. 11

Click here for today's reading

There's a lot of things in this chapter that don't make sense, so I'm going to focus on what does:

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.

Day 72, March 13 - 1 Cor. 12

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

It's important to discover your gift(s) and use them for God but as the rest of the chapter reminds us it's also important to remember that we are one body with many members. We need each other we're not complete by ourselves.

Day 67, March 8, 1 Corinthians 9

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 ESV
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

Thursday, the 7th We're in 1 Corinthians 8. 9 But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. Paul is talking about food offered to idols, but I think we need to be careful to look at our lives and not causing someone to stumble through our actions.

I always forget what condition the church in Corinth was during this letter from Paul. They were suing each other and the sexual immorality appears to be a big problem. However, I want to be careful not to throw stones, all churches have struggles they are filled with people. It is a reminder to pray for each other that we don't fall into sin.

Verse 7 - Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

The Corinth church had some that were living in sexual immorality. Paul commands them to deal with it and reminds us that old leaven or the old ways before Jesus need to be done away with because it corrupts the good.

Certain parts of this chapter confuse me and I'm not sure what Paul is saying, but one thing is clear we should be imitators of him. He gave himself wholeheartedly to the gospel of Christ as well as his life to share that gospel. As I think about Paul's life and all he did and then examine my own life I realize just how far short I am. Not that all of us are called to be a Paul but we are all called. With the changes I made last year I'm still trying to find my place in this world. Things for me to chew on as my boss likes to say.
