May 10, Day 131 - Acts 12

Click here to go to Acts 12

The first of Jesus' disciples in martyred and Peter is imprisoned.  I love how Peter thought it was a vision and then Rhoda leaves him at the door to tell the others who don't believe him.  Can you imagine the scene? In some ways it had to be funny and in so many ways it had to energize the faith of the believers.

Herod's end is another great reminder of the dangers of pride. We might not be eaten by worms in the way he was, but we are definitely "damaged" in other ways when we let pride rule in our lives.

  1. Acts 12
4-5 After capturing Peter, Herod had him thrown into prison with sixteen soldiers in squads of four to guard him. So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was praying very hard to God for him.

The power of prayer to God

Acts 5:17-21 "But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought."

So Peter is highly guarded this time!

    Acts 12
7a Suddenly, an angel from the Lord stood near Peter...

"Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)"

    Amazing grace
    How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind, but now I see
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
    And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
    The hour I first believed
    My chains are gone
    I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy rains
    Unending love, Amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me
    His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
    As long as life endures

    [2x]
    My chains are gone
    I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy rains
    Unending love, Amazing grace

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
    The sun forbear to shine
But God, Who called me here below
    Will be forever mine
    Will be forever mine
    You are forever mine
