This is a very challenging chapter. The reminder of our need to remain faithful and not deny Christ. The consequences of denying Him are so great. Likewise the idea of not valuing our human life too much, because the truth is even though we could be killed by our faith no one can kill our soul.
But as Jesus is talking about losing our lives, he also reminds us of the sparrow and the fact that we are more valuable to Him than a sparrow. What a glorious promise! Yet, He never says we'll be spared death of our body.
This is a chapter I probably need to read several times to fully digest everything it has to say to me.
“Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword."
ReplyDeleteThis is a verse I've just ignored in the past because I didn't like it. It didn't seem like something Jesus would say. But, after pondering it a bit, I think really he is talking about the gospel when he talks about the sword. Talking about the gospel brings up conflict, but it is a necessary conversation. We often hear people say, "Talk about anything but religion or politics." Why not talk about religion or the gospel? Because, it can lead to conflict. It pushes people's buttons. It is so much easier to avoid it.
On another note, I've always loved the verses about the sparrow and love the song "His Eye is on the Sparrow". It is very comforting to me when I'm in a place of fear - worrying about money, etc.

Lamentations 2:13b,14 Your iniquity has not been exposed so as to release you from captivity. Jeremiah 6:16a! Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask which paths are the old, reliable paths. Ask which way leads to blessings. Live that way, and find a resting place for yourselves. Lamentations 3:22b,23. His compassion is never limited. It is new every morning. His faithfulness is great.
