Day 4 - John 2

For Day 4 we're back to John Chapter 2.
Here’s the link for the YouVersion John 2 passage:

In chapter 2 Jesus performs his first miracle at a wedding in Cana. This is such a great story and miracle. Here the family is attending a wedding when Mary finds out they're out of wine. The interaction between Mary and Jesus is priceless. I wonder what Jesus was thinking when Mary approached Him.

After the wedding Jesus goes to Jerusalem for Passover and has his first recorded conflict with the religious leaders. (At least the first one recorded by John.)

What aspect of this chapter jumps out at you?

  1. I've always loved that mother-son interaction too--so shows the human side of the relationship. =)

In recent years I've been really interested in the recordings of Jesus driving the money-changers out of the temple. All my life I'd heard this as an example of righteous anger--until my husband said, "How do we know he was angry? I see the actions, I can understand the thought behind it--but it strikes me as deliberate, not an act of passionate anger."

I thought he had a point. Jesus is filled with zeal, yes--but is this Him losing his head, or executing a plan? We tend to look at the passage as a license to get mad, so long as it's for a good cause. Makes me wonder if it's not, rather, a license to rock the boat, so long as it's for a godly reason, and NOT an excuse to lose our tempers.

    Thoughts?

  2. I guess what jumps at me was the fact that Mary wanted Jesus to do something , He says His time has not yet come , but does it anyway. Found this a bit cute in a mother/child sort of way, it seems he didn't want to disobey His Mother. And when thinking of the commandments ..He wouldn't have.

  3. I was thinking about the sevants at the wedding. Surely they understood that a miracle had just taken place. I hope they were deeply changed!

  4. John 2:10b But you have saved the best wine for now.
How awesome is it as we are yielded to Him we are changed every day to His best!

  5. Roseanna, you're right! My Pastor spoke on this a few months back. No where in the text does it say Jesus was angry, that is an assumption that was placed long ago and it just keeps going.

I seriously doubt Jesus did anything 'spur of the moment' it was all part of the bigger plan and this story isn't an excuse for us to lose our tempers.
    Thanks for sharing ladies!

  6. Roseanna, when I was reading this last night in ESV, Jesus was not angry and yelling...just getting them out.

  7. “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”

I liked this part. Sort of a foretaste of some future lessons. The last being first.

Also, on Jesus being angry - I never thought that it doesn't say he was angry. I think we make that assumption because most of the movies and pictures we've seen of the story show an angry Jesus. The interpretation that he wasn't angry, but was teaching a lesson is much more in keeping with the loving Jesus we know from most of the other stories about him.

  8. Sharon,
I hadn't thought about the "last being first" introduction to future lessons. I wonder to, if this could also apply to our future home with the Lord. It's gonna be good!
